“Throughout the four years of 2001’s conception and production, Kubrick struggled with the problem of portraying a genuinely alien creature, until he decided that anything visible on screen and comprehensible to audiences would not, by definition, be ‘alien’ to them. This is a prototype alien body. Christiane Kubrick worked on a number of ideas, seeking to deliver on her husband’s request for ‘something in a shape that doesn’t remind you of anything, in a color that doesn’t exist.’” Foto gefotografeerd uit:

“Female figures such as this, usually modelled in clay or carved in hippopotamus ivory or bone, were frequently placed in tombs during the Egyptian Predynastic period (c.5500-2972 BC), although si few come from legitimate excavations that their exact context remains unclear. It is thought that they may have served as an aid to rebirth in the afterlife.”
