“The Oppression of a Utopia” – mixed media installation
VAV Department of Moving Image
What makes people question reality in the first place?… Is it reality the most wanted place to be?
Images are a simulation of reality. The body, objectifying, becomes a sign, searching to identify with the imagery and be part of the reality. The body remains captured in a space in between that is real and not real, in the same time. It is a trap of the desire of being part of something. Sometimes of something great, but also ephemeral and tragic.
I question and provoke my own reality, simulating what could be real, making disappeared objects, gestures and echoes become real, re-contextualizing meaning.
During the anti-communist Romanian Revolution from 1989, along with people that sacrificed for freedom, I wanted to be part of it but I only had the chance to watch it on TV. Recurrent images occur to me as a duty of choreographing my own revolution, simulating something that has been simulated.
