David Jablonowski in Kunst is Lang

‘Ars longa, vita brevis’ verzuchtte de Griekse arts en grondlegger van de westerse geneeskunde Hippocrates (4e eeuw voor Christus): ‘Kunst is lang, het leven is kort’. Een mensenleven was volgens hem niet genoeg om de geneeskunde onder de knie te krijgen.

Zo’n 2200 jaar laat Goethe zijn personage Wagner, de assistent van de beroemde Faust, de zelfde woorden vertwijfeld uitroepen. KUNST IS LANG, en het leven is kort.

De beeldende kunst is als een altijd doorstomende trein die zich een weg baant langs stromingen, niches, uitspattingen en extravaganza. Het tempo van afwisselingen en opkomende kunstenaars is hoog, de zendtijd voor hedendaagse kunst bescheiden. In het uur van KUNST IS LANG zal Luuk Heezen de verdieping opzoeken met een hedendaagse kunstenaar. Een gesprek over het werk, over vreemde ideeën, over de vooroordelen binnen kunst, en over het (doodnormale) dagelijkse leven van de kunstenaar. Dit seizoen is Kunst is Lang niet alleen te horen op de radio, maar ook te bekijken via de Kunst is Lang Youtube en Arttube.

In his works, Jablonowski examines the surface and the evolution of the contemporary communication technologies. In the form of sculptures, videos and installations, he focuses on the theme of the development of language as a technically reproducible code and its aesthetic development with regard to the communication of knowledge and information. The artistic medium of sculpture seems to be contrary to this topic. His artistic interest is on the sculptural quality of communication techniques as well as the specific aesthetics of different historical information codes and formats, which make a long-term impact on perception and cultural self-conception.

Koos Buster Stroucken: ”My work portrays the search for a certain “doltish perfection” or something trivial that could also be celebrated. When I have an idea, I start sketching. Those sketches are a first step into the process, but I also like to see them as potential finished works, fully established within the sketch phase. The innocence and messiness of a quick sketch has elements I like to see returned in a final piece of work. 
For the graduation show, I made a museum of installed works. A wall fully covered with plates, quoting almost everything I don’t like. They are a celebration of my frustrations and anger.  For these plates, I used the same glaze technique some people call “Delft Blue”. 
My grandmother used to take me to the Rijksmuseum when I was young. My favourite part of the museum were the miniature ships of the Golden Age. They always fascinated me, those big ships from another time, presented in ultra-small scale. The “Cruiseship” showcases this fascination, in my own personal way. 
The “Schoonmakerswaagen” is the extensive edition of an earlier work I’ve made (“Mob Bucket”, exhibited in Frans Hals Museum two years ago). Just like with the old masters from the Golden Age, this ceramic “Cleaning Trolly” is the enhanced, master revision; it is my graduation masterpiece.
