Me Magazine #21

Mike Mills is eenmalig gastredacteur voor Me Magazine waarvoor hij tien vrienden en bekenden interviewt. Het is een dun, goed vormgegeven tijdschrift, dat vlot en helder leest.
Twee impressies:

Miranda July

My wife, my best friend, one of my very, very favourite artists, oh so funny, and the rest is private.

You get to be 13 again. You’re the same person, the same life as before. Please tell me 5 concrete things, actions, and choices you do differently this time.
Love, Husband

Ok, I’m assuming here that I somehow have a dual mind – I am me now, knowing what I know, but alongside that awareness is my 13-year-old mind.

1. I would take note of how I feel about my parents. I can’t remember, emotionally, what it was like to have the admiration and fundamental belief in them that I had before I began to question everything.

2.I would braid my long hair into two braids and cross them over the top of my head. I love that look, but I never did it back then. It’s probably a pretty nerdy style for a 13-year-old in 1987, but I would do it to humour myself because I doubt I’ll ever have long hair again.

3. Even though this might change the course of my whole life, and I like my life, I would go Berkeley High School instead of The College Preparatory School.

4. I would learn to play piano instead of feeling like I was already too old. Also: tap-dancing, I’d stick with it.

5. Truth be told, I don’t have many regrets. Mostly, I would just enjoy tripping out with my dual mind. I would give my 13-year-old self a split second of awareness of what it’s like to be 37, and I would teach it that you don’t have a bunch up your nightgown into a ball, you can just use your finger. I would also tell her everything I know about skincare. Basically, I would mother myself. Weirdly, I think this might have actually happened. I had this ‘angel’ that I mentally talked to when I got freaked out when I was younger; she would say soothing things like, ‘You’re okay, it’s gonna be okay’. Maybe the angel was actually me at 37?! No, that seems unlikely, but it proves it is possible to have two minds at once - one wise and calm, the other young and bereft.

Jennifer Johnson

My costume designer and great friend. She is to colour what cheese is to macaroni, and her relationship with her Hairless Rex (a cat called Rhys) is one of the deeper, more beautiful, more committed relationships I’ve seen between any two things.

Tell me 10 things you need to know about Rhys if you are to know him at all.

1. Rhys is a Cornish Rex cat born on April 5 1991.
2. Rhys loves to do things that Persian cats hate to do such as getting brushed and eating hairball medicine.
3. People think Rhys is bald, but in fact, he has curly hair.
4. Rhys loves mushrooms, watermelon, and avocado.
5. Rhys is injected with subcutaneous fluids once a day.
6. Rhys misses Blue, Ollie, and Mortimer.
7. Sometimes Rhys meows like a human baby cries. When I am on the phone, people on the other line think I have a baby.
8. Rhys loves to sunbathe and would like to move to Miami.
9. Rhys likes it when I sing his theme song ‘Boofaleena, Boofaleena hear me roarrr. Boofaleena hear me roarrrrrrrrrr, down by the highway is a winneabaaaaaagooooo,’ inspired by Nat King Cole’s ‘Mona Lisa’.
10. Coyotes have been afraid of Rhys.

Bonus things to know:
11. It’s Reece, not Rice
12. Rhys is alive!
