"...more fun to be had afterwards"
Finishing art school for me was quite similar to finally getting over puberty, sure I’d had an infinite number of good times, but sometimes it was hard and often it was frustrating and I was well aware that there was more fun to be had afterwards.
I, for one am completely unaccustomed to commitment, before this I had never stayed 4 years in any one school continuously, having moved around a lot in my life, so before I began I suspected I might get exhausted by it, which I did, four years is a mighty long time, especially when you’re young. But I also know that it was the best school for me to go to and that I learned more than I believe I could have done in any other school. I’m very happy with my education and how much I learned in the time I spent at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, and I’m also very happy that this chapter is over and I’m glad to be back home.
I am writing this from my home office, which is a pseudonym for an old dining table in the middle of my living room where I have set up shop until I find an affordable studio to work in. I try to spend a little time every day drawing and I have set up a facebook page for my art where I post drawings daily, I thought of this as a way to both keep my mind on my art, even when I don’t have very much time for it and no upcoming shows, and as a way to keep my work in circulation on the internet. I’ve always tried to put as much as I can of my work on the internet because it’s a very cheap and effective way of showing people my work and it’s an excellent way to get international attention. I highly recommend it, most of my commissioned work comes from people finding one of my websites or online profiles.
At the moment I spend most of my time working at a funky vintage store in down town Reykjavík to save some money so I can afford my art projects. I have an expensive documentary photography trip in mind for next summer which I am also applying for grants for and I’m trying to set some money aside now for film and fuel. Next autumn I also have an exhibition in The Reykjavík museum of photography which I am very excited about already.
I wish I could spend more time with my art but at the moment this is all I can afford, at least I set aside a little time for it every day, I have big plans for the future and I even think I’ll go somewhere new and exciting to get my masters in a couple of years. I already miss the student life everytime someone with black square glasses and a Fjällraven backpack walks into my store, which is about four times a day on avarege.
Of course I wont pretend I have completely settled in to life after school, having only graduated a couple of months ago, but so far it sort of kicks ass.
Much love, Sunna Ben
